12 Things Women Believe Were Only Designed With Men’s Needs in Mind

Although women also contribute to the economy and are consumers, many products and systems out there are designed specifically for men, even though women have to use them too. The issue would appear to be that men often design products with their own needs in mind. The following is a list of things that women believe weren’t probably designed for them.

Cars

Cars are clearly designed for men. Women have to adjust the seat so drastically just so they can see over the steering wheel that they end up being far too close to the airbags, which can pose a very real danger. People often criticize women for sitting so close to the steering wheel, but it’s not like there’s any other choice.

“I’m a short woman and I’m terrified of the airbag.”

Pockets

For some reason, whoever designed pants and dresses for women forgot that women also like carrying items around with them. But hardly any wardrobe items have properly sized pockets if any at all. If they have pockets, they’re usually so small that they can’t fit anything, especially not an average smartphone. Do clothing designers not realize women have phones, keys, and more but don’t always want to lug around a purse?

“Why are the pockets in women’s clothing so small or even have the fake pocket?”

Construction Tools

Not only are most construction tools, gear, and clothes made for right-handed people, but also for men. Just imagine how hard of a time you’d have buying decent tools as a left-handed woman! The construction industry in general appears to be a man’s world. One reader expressed the things that bother her: “Work gloves in multipacks only for large and xl hands. Houses with super high shelves.”

Cupboards

It’s funny how women are expected to take care of the kitchen and housework, but every cupboard in the house is way too high up. Women regularly have to step on their tiptoes or even on stepping stools and chairs just to reach their own cupboards.

“I can’t remember the last time I went to get a glass and didn’t have to use a stepping stool.”

Seat Belts

Going back to cars, seat belts are designed for men specifically. Ever realize how every video with a crash test dummy features a male crash test dummy? This is a really serious problem because seat belts are meant to save lives, but if they aren’t designed for women, how are they supposed to protect them?

“Honestly have you ever seen a crash test video of a dummy that had a woman’s body type in it? Every single one I’ve ever watched has a man’s body: flat chest, tall (average height).”

Unisex Clothing

Although unisex clothing is advertised as being ideal for all sexes, it does not appear to be the case. There are some manufacturers which even state that they use men’s sizing charts to make unisex clothes, which makes no sense at all. Making unisex clothes that are designed specifically for men it’s completely ridiculous!

“Old Navy straight up says on their website that they use they men’s t-shirt sizing/fit for their unisex shirts.”

Office Chairs and Desks

If you’ve ever sat at an office desk as a woman, you probably have experienced the phenomenon of your feet never being able to touch the ground because you have to set the chair so high just so you can see your computer monitor. If you happen to lower your chair down so your feet can touch the ground, you end up hurting your arms.

“Office desks and chairs. I’m petite and if I sit at the appropriate height in my office chair so that my arms are 90° on the desk, my feet dangle in the air.”

Gym Equipment

Gym equipment is also designed for men specifically. The vast majority of workout machines you might find at your local gym have sizes that are ideal for men. Women often have  problems getting a good sweat going because of these sizing issues.

“I have this problem a lot with workout equipment at my gym, especially ab machines.”

Diet and Nutrition Books

Although there are some diet and nutrition books designed for women, the majority of them appear to be for men. All of the literature on metabolic activity is generally based on the metabolism of men, which serves women absolutely no purpose.

“All the literature is also based on men in metabolic activity. Our metabolism shifts as the phases do.”

Medications

You’d think that with something as crucial as medication that testing would be performed equally on men and women, but this just isn’t the case. There are plenty of medications out there that are primarily tested on men. Then, when women take these same medications, there tend to be different and more severe side effects.

“Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic) is an example of a medication that was primarily tested on men and when women take it, the side effects are significantly more frequent.”

The Economy

The economy itself is generally based around men and how they function to earn money. Women’s professions are generally paid less, and doing something like raising a child and caring for other people in general is usually not very highly valued.

“Most women’s professions somehow are paid less. Wonder how that happens?”

Console Controllers

Women might also find themselves having trouble holding video game and console controllers. Sure, men might really enjoy their video games all day long, but there are plenty of women who like gaming too. Unfortunately, most of the controllers are designed way too large.

“Console controllers. Standard ones are too big for my hands and using them a lot becomes uncomfortable.”
