The original poster (OP) and her boyfriend were tired after a long day and decided to grab some fast food for dinner. But what started as an agreement on the order turned into a major conflict.
Her Boyfriend Suggested Cheeseburgers
Her boyfriend suggested they grab cheeseburgers for dinner. At first OP said she wasn’t very hungry but really wanted french fries.
She Asked Him to Share the Fries
She asked her boyfriend if he would be fine with sharing a large fries. He agreed to share.
She Changed Her Mind
OP recognized that she was hungrier than she thought and got a cheeseburger for herself. She asked him if he still wanted to share the large fries and he confirmed that he did.
He Started Eating on the Way Home
OP says on the the way home her boyfriend “went to town” on the french fries. This was only two miles away from the restaurant and less than a mile away from her house.
She Was Shocked the Bag Was Almost Empty
She reached into the bag and saw there was barely any fries left. She claims there were maybe ten fries in the container and whatever was in the bottom of the bag. There were about a quarter of the fries left.
She Was Upset
OP was angry and pointed out that he ate almost all of the fries. She says she became quiet so she could calm herself down but was obviously angry.
He Apologized
Her boyfriend apologized and said “sorry, I’m really bad about waiting to eat.”
She Called Him Rude
She told him that it was rude to finish so many fries when he knew that she wanted some.
He Apologized – Again
He said “I’m sorry I didn’t know you wanted that many.”
She Wouldn’t Let it Go
Despite her boyfriend’s apologies, OP says she wanted a real apology and acknowledgment of her feelings. They settled on that he thought that a quarter of the fries was enough for her since she said she didn’t want many.
Who is at Fault? The Readers Respond
Some readers advised that french fries should always be plentiful so order more than you think, rendering everybody at fault.
“When will people learn this lesson? Order more fries than you think you need because smelling them is going to turn people into potato devouring gremlins.”
Doesn’t He Know How to Share?
Some readers wondered how he doesn’t understand what “sharing” means. It typically means something is split in half.
“He knew he was eating all the fries, he knew you two were sharing them. He then gave excuses that are clearly lies- oh I figured you just wanted a quarter of the fries- and we know they are lies because he didn’t know there were hidden extra fries in the bag, so he didn’t save you a quarter of the fries, you stopped him before he could eat ALL of them, and when you say you are sharing something, that means 50/50 unless otherwise discussed.”
Many suggested she not even consider sharing with him again.
“Next time/every time… get your own fries or whatever. Even if it’s cheaper to split a large than two smaller ones. And don’t share, because your fellow obviously doesn’t know how to share. WTF, he ate almost all the fries, (as far as he knew, not noticing the ones in the bottom of the bag!), before you even got home. Even though he knew you wanted some.”
Are There Some Underlying Issues?
He already apologized twice and yet it still wasn’t enough for OP. Is she harboring resentment from past arguments in the relationship?
“Yeah he ate your fries but he apologized right away and you just continued to berate him. “i want a real apology” is such bull, you GOT an apology, you just decided he didn’t feel bad enough about it and needed to keep apologizing until he’d groveled enough.”
