The original poster (OP) hired a babysitter who has been watching her two children for about two months. She is only 16 years-old and OP calls her a sweet and quiet girl. But OP can’t seem to forgive a mistake that she also contributed to.
She’s there Almost Everyday
The babysitter comes to watch the kids Monday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm.
OP Asked Her if She Had Requests for Drinks or Snacks
OP asked the babysitter if she would like her to keep any particular drinks or snacks in the house since she is there for so long.
She Requested a Drink
OP says she mentioned that she really likes seltzer water.
She Put Them in the Fridge
OP says she bought them for the first month but forgot after a while and didn’t keep any in the fridge after that.
She Recently Bought Drinks for Her and Her Husband
OP bought hard seltzer for her and her husband a few days ago and put it in the fridge.
OP Received a Message from the Babysitter
The babysitter messaged OP and told her she wasn’t feeling well. She told her she might need to go home.
OP Told Her to Wait
The babysitter asked OP to come home earlier but OP asked her to try to hold out until the end of the day.
She Called Crying
OP says not too long after, the babysitter called her crying. She said something was wrong and she had to go home.
OP Made Her Walk Home
When OP got home she saw that the babysitter was clearly drunk and had drank the seltzer.
The Babysitter Messaged the Next Day
The babysitter contacted OP the next day and said didn’t know the seltzer had alcohol and she had never drank before.
She’s Against Drinking
The babysitter is actually against drinking as both of her parents were alcoholics and she was diagnosed with PTSD because of it. OP says the babysitter told her she never planned on drinking ever.
OP Yelled at Her
OP says she scolded her and told her to never come back because she put her children in danger.
The Babysitter Was Devastated
She called OP again crying that she didn’t know and that she cared deeply about her children. She said she would never drink with them or at all again.
She Needs the Money
The babysitter told OP that she needs the money to pay for her driver’s permit and OP knows she doesn’t come from a family that is well off financially.
OP Told Her No
OP told her to go find a real job and that it wasn’t her fault that she got drunk.
Her Husband Thinks She’s Being Rude
Her husband thinks she’s being rude and that at least the babysitter tried to reach out when she wasn’t feeling well. Her kids are also upset.
The Readers Respond
The readers overwhelmingly responded that OP is indeed a jerk.
“You’re an ungodly jerk. Those seltzers are newish in the alcohol world and I wouldn’t expect someone who hates alcohol to know that. How mature of her to let you know. How immature of you to do what you did.”
“I am well over 16 and grabbed one accidentally a few weeks ago from my own fridge. They also don’t taste all that much of alcohol so I was a good third of the way down before I realized my mistake.”
OP’s Behavior is Unbelievable
Not only did she not take any responsibility for confusing the poor babysitter with the seltzer, she further punished her by making her walk home alone while drunk. She refused to rehire her when she was apologizing profusely for making an innocent mistake and through the comments it came out that she was only paying the babysitter $100 for 60 hours of work. The readers were absolutely appalled and rightfully let OP have it.
“Also is this in the US? there’s no way it’s legal to work a 16 year old for 60 hours a week? And I read somewhere that she ONLY PAID HER $100 for those 60 hours. She’s definitely exploiting this child for labor. She’s literally paying her like $1.16 an hour. Seriously hope this 16 year old doesn’t accept her offer.”

The original poster’s (OP) husband’s sister moved in with them weeks ago because of problems she was having with her boyfriend. OP says they are unlikely to get back together because her sister-in-law won’t go back until he apologizes. But she broke his Xbox device in an argument so this may not happen. Unfortunately for OP, the sister-in-law (SIL) has been creating problems in OP’s life and now things have come to a head.
Her Nanny’s Friends Called Her a Karen and a Monster After She Fired Her at the Water Park She Was at After Calling in Sick But She Was Tired of the Nanny’s Antics
The original poster (OP) and her husband hired a nanny named Marie to care for their kids while they worked. Her children where on hybrid school schedules, so they hired Marie to work full-time. They of course set out some guidelines and expectations, but Marie seemed to have some problems with following them.
